The Pros and Cons of Organic Essential Oils

Pros of Essential Oils

What are organic essential oils?

They are oils made using flowers, herbs and parts of trees such as bark, flower petals, roots and peels. Cells that give plants their fragrant smell are their essence. When essence is taken out from plants, it becomes essential oil.

Substantial amounts of plant products are required to produce organic essential oils. For instance, if you want to produce a pound of lavender oil, you’ll need at least 200 pounds lavender flowers.

Essential oils aren’t necessarily products made using plant essence. The process used to make them doesn’t interfere with the plant’s chemistry. For a product to qualify as an essential oil, it shouldn’t be blended or mixed with any other chemicals.

1. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is derived from lavender flowers and is among the best rated organic essential oils.

It slows down the CNS (central nervous system), enhances quality and quantity of sleep, improves concentration span and also enhances growth of hair. Additionally, lavender oil can effectively fight anxiety.

2. Jojoba Oil

Extracted from seeds of jojoba shrub, Jojoba oil consists of distinctive fatty-alcohol esters and fatty-acids superior to those in sperm whales. Jojoba shrub is a rare desert plant that is found in North-West Mexico and California. The oil is poplar because of its effectiveness in fastening the healing of wounds.

3. Eucalyptus Oil

This is an extremely powerful biocide that’s extracted from a species of eucalyptus trees known as Eucalyptus Odorata. It can kill bacteria, insects (such as lice), nematodes and acaricides. Eucalyptus oil is particularly effective against Staphylococcus Aureus, Streptococcus Pneumonia, Haemophilus Influenza and Staphylococcus Agalactiae, among other bacterial strains.

The product is also ideal for use by people who suffer from mild respiratory conditions like chest congestion and coughing.

4. Tea Tree Oil

It’s an essential oil that is usually extracted from tea trees or paper-back trees. In Australia, it has been used for hundreds of years as an anti-septic. The natives of Australia (Bundjalumg aborigines) used to treat coughing and infected wounds using extracts from Tea Trees.

Today, it’s popularly used in many countries across the world because of its strong antibacterial, anti-protozoal, anti-fungal as well as antiviral properties.

The oil works against harmful microorganisms by destroying cell membranes. Additionally, it impedes the growth and spread of fungi and yeast. You can apply it on broken skin to prevent infection.

5. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint Oil is also among the best rated organic essential oils. It can minimize effects and even get rid of conditions like nausea, anxiety, persistent headache, indigestion and bloated stomach. It works by enhancing the speed of elimination in the digestive system.

The oil calms down the stomach’s involuntary smooth muscles, resulting in antispasmodic effects and enhanced flow of bile from the bile duct.

It can soothe the discomfort that is usually caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The oil’s effectiveness is mainly attributed to menthol, a compound that impedes movement of electrolytes into and out of cell membranes, thus effectively stopping involuntary contractions.

Other essential oils

The above are some of the best rated organic essential oils. Others include;

6. Clove Oil

7. Sandalwood Oil

8. Frankincense Oil

9. Rosemary Oil

10. Lemon Oil

11. Oregano Oil

Side effects

The oils sometime cause side effects such as mild allergic reactions and irritation in the eyes, nose (specifically in mucous membranes) and skin, particularly if they’re consumed without following instructions. In rare cases, they also cause damage to the liver and kidneys.

It’s therefore important to strictly opt for the best rated organic essential oils.
